The Basel Convention Coordinating Centre for the African Region held an inception workshop on the project “Accelerating Community Awareness on Plastic Waste Through Interventions with Students and Graduates of Tertiary Educational Institutions in Ibadan, Nigeria”.
The event took place on the 18th of June 2025 at Olabamiji Hall, Department of Peace, Security and Humanitarian Studies, Parry Road, University of Ibadan.
The workshop was as an inception workshop to kickstart the project, which at its core involves a series of training workshops to train final-year students of the University of Ibadan, The Polytechnic Ibadan and National Youth Service Corps members serving in Ibadan, Nigeria.
This project seeks to train about 1300 youths who will serve as ambassadors to impart knowledge on plastic waste issues to persons (children, secondary school students, local women, informal sector workers, youth groups) in communities where the final-year students will eventually be posted in their service year. It is also expected that serving Corps Members who will be trained will also take what they have learnt and create awareness in the city of Ibadan
The Project was declared open by the the Honorable Minister of Environment, who was represented by the Head of Pollution Control, Federal Ministry of Environment (Lagos office), Mrs. Temitope Babarinde who encouraged participants to engage fully with all aspects of the projects. Also in attendance were the representative of: the Dean of Students of the University of Ibadan, The Polytechnic Ibadan, Oyo State NYSC State Coordinator and selected final year students from U.I, Poly Ibadan and serving Corps Members in Ibadan.
